Which types of structural framing systems and materials are most commonly used in the US for residences? For office buildings?

What factors determine why these are the most used materials?

US residences use mostly wood framing while office buildings use mostly steel framing. Homes are smaller and weigh significantly less so they can opt for the cheaper but still sturdy wood. Office buildings are typically much taller and heavier so need steel beams to support the load.

Why do different teams of designers and subcontractors link and share their models during the design process?

What are the advantages of linking models?

Are there any disadvantages to linking models?

Different designers and subcontractors link and share models to ensure their visions are aligned throughout the full process. The advantage of linking models is that everyone can see if they are on the same page. A disadvantage is the model can become too cluttered and all teams are now working less efficiently.

How do you think design coordination was done before we started using digital models?

What advantages does doing this coordination digitally have over previous methods?

What strategies can design teams use to find and avoid clashes prior to the start of construction?

What can be done besides sharing the models digitally?

At what point in the project development process should design coordination start?

Is it ever too early?

Coordination should start after all teams create an initial design. It is important that all groups see what is optimal in each others eyes before they come together to create a full coordinated model.
