What are the principal advantages of creating a conceptual design model using masses before diving into the detailed design and building element modeling?

It allows you to brainstorm several possibilities for a building that can fill a space. So much can be revealed about how a construction can enhance the surrounding landscape or how much it can become a nuisance. Brainstorming like this is super effective.

Should all buildings be modeled first using conceptual masses?

When is it needed/appropriate? And when not?

For example, should you create a conceptual mass model of a small house?

  • Not all building should be modeled using conceptual masses first. It is most appropriate for buildings that would alter a skyline drastically or impact the environment with its shape. Conceptual models of a small house aren’t driving such drastic impacts. Unless all of the other houses in the neighborhood are crazy and unique architectural marvels, this isn’t necessary.
