Module 3 - Project Goals Targets & Strategies
List your three or four guiding design goals using this format for each goal:
Goal 1: respect but reimagine local building methods
- Measure: materials usage, techniques
- Targets:
- min: aesthetic consistency with traditional methods
- goal: combination of traditional building methods and materials
- Strategies:
- incorporation of materials such as tuff and stone as a facade
- usage of stone-cut techniques, tuff, and stone beyond facade, incorporation of innovative building and insulation techniques. Research into which practices are beneficial and which ones can be rethought. Research into which practices can be imported from elsewhere.
Goal 2: sustainable building practices that minimize active energy usage
- Measure: energy usage intensity, % embodied carbon, total energy consumption over a year, LEED
- Targets:
- minimally acceptable value
- desired / target value
- Strategies:
- The cold weather of my site poses limitations to how much energy can be conserved but innovative heating techniques can still make a difference as well as the design of the building that can on its own contain and capture heat.
- material choices and combinations
Goal 3: affordability- low-cost, accessible materials, and methods
- Measure: price of building renovation
- Targets:
- spend 25% less than comparable local projects (building from ground up)
- spend 50% less than comparable local projects (building from ground up)
- offer methods of repeating the methods
- Strategies:
- use an existing building as a base to limit costs
- use recycled materials from other unfinished projects in the area
- use local materials
Goal 4: attraction of locals and foreigners alike
- Measure: number of visitors and occupancy post project completion
- Targets:
- seasonal occupation of the building by either locals or visitors
- year-round occupation of the building by community members cultural events, attraction of visitors to vanadzor who are discovering the city and the country- profit brought into the city
- Strategies:
- emphasis on cultural richness of the region and the country- use of art and architecture that reflects the regional culture, history, and uniqueness. The creation of a landmark.
- public transportation connection with the site that allows for direct contact between the site and the rest of the city
- usage of hotel right next door- grow what is already there
