4D simulations are often used to show the construction sequence for an entire project, but shorter simulations that focus on a specific period of time are also useful.

  • Can you provide examples of how a simulation that focuses on a 1 or 2 week period could be useful for planning?

A 1-2 week period simulation would be useful for a technically complicated element of the project or to isolate one aspect of the larger project, particularly when the project involves different teams working on different project elements that are simultaneous or overlap. For example, a 1-2 week simulation would be useful if it just focused on one element (like roofing) and showed the construction timeline that is relevant to the team associated with roof design and construction.

What level of detail should be included in a 4D simulation?

  • Should you include all of the elements in the building model?

The level of detail needed in a 4D simulation depends on who the targeted audience for the simulation is. For example, getting an idea of how the building is constructed relative to surrounding environmental constraints would need a less detailed simulation and one that focuses on the building footprint and structure as a whole. However, a team determining how to install electrical systems and fixtures would need a more detailed simulation of the interior of the building that is relevant to their objective.

How can model-based quantity takeoff improve the design process?

How can designers improve their designs using the information provided by preliminary estimates of the cost of building their design ideas?

Model-based quantity takeoff allows designers to accurately estimate costs and create a realistic budget. This also means that designers can more easily foresee when the project goes over budget and be able to plan for alternative designs before materials are ordered and construction starts. This simplifies the budgeting process and also prevents risk for going over a project budget.
