What are the principal advantages of using a single building information model of the existing conditions as the foundation for modeling proposed additions or renovations?

  • Why not create a separate model for the new proposed design?

What sort of complexities are introduced when you construct a building complex in phases?

  • What happens at the interfaces between the buildings as the phases advance?
  • How can you plan and prepare for these complexities as you create your initial building model?

What are the principal advantages of using a single building information model of the existing conditions as the foundation for modeling several proposed design alternatives for a portion of the building?

Using a single building information model allows the overall geometric shape of the building to be consistent and preserved between design options. Design options allow alternatives to be organized and switched easily within one model.

  • Why not create a separate model for each of the design alternatives?

It is not wise to create a separate model because changes made to the building outside of the design alternatives will not carry over to other models.

In your project, which features of the proposed design did you choose to model as design alternatives?

I chose two different room layouts for an open hall on the third floor (auditorium or large conference room) and two different roof options (sloped cutoff roof or sloped raised roof)

  • Why did you choose these building features?
  • I chose these building features because I thought that they were interesting and realistic as the design options offered their own advantages and disadvantages. The auditorium space focused more on students, while the conference room focused more on group meetings. The sloped roof matched the existing architecture while the raised roof gave a greater sense of open space.

  • And what were the biggest challenges in modeling them as the design alternatives?
  • The biggest challenge was making all the design alternatives appealing. There are many little edits that can be made so concise options had to be chosen with clear intentions to make the modeling clear and consistent
