Module 7 - Points to Ponder

Why do different teams of designers and subcontractors link and share their models during the design process?

Linking models helps us make sure they align perfectly and there is no difference in dimensions or other small details. This gives the structural team access to the necessary parts of the building without showing them our whole design. One disadvantage is that sometimes a different team has new insight on the building and needs to fix or upgrade an aspect of it but wouldn’t be ble to because they don’t have access to the actual model.

How do you think design coordination was done before we started using digital models?

Coordination between the models was done in 2D using blueprints and drawings of the models (both in 2D and 3D). These drawings can lead to confusion or miscommunication and are very complex. Doing it digitally instead helps us make sure the models align perfectly and there is more ease in making and understanding the models.

What strategies can design teams use to find and avoid clashes prior to the start of construction?

The teams can meet up to assure there is no confusion between the different models or the tasks that need to be completed. Having proper communication on top of the digital models assures nothing is being missed and any new knowledge a team has can be integrated into the project. If everyone is informed of every key aspect of the project there will be less mistakes.
