Your Design Journal entries for this module should highlight:

  • the design alternatives that you modeled and tested
  • the results of the analyses and how they influenced your thinking about how to move forward

Use text , images, web links, movies... Whatever media works best to express your ideas!

Your Recommendation for the “Best” Design Option

Create a few paragraphs outlining a brief explanation of why you chose this design option as the “best” after comparing your analyses of the proposals. Explain your reasoning and the tradeoffs that influenced your decision about which design option to move forward with.

Solar Analysis

The solar analysis is a very important analysis for this sustainability focused exhibition center. While wanting to show off key sustainable features being able to effecctive use solar panels on many different surfaces and building faces is critical to the success of the building. While both Proposal 3 (left) and Proposal 2 (middle) provide good surfaces for solar panels the MANY viables panels in Proposal 1 (right) give the exhibition center the ability to display the solar panels in many different locations as well as benefitting from their energy gains being only marginally smaller than Prop. 3 and 2.

Daylight Hours

While having many daylight hours is a priority for the building for both sustainability usage such as heating, solar, and natural air filtration it’s important for the exhibition purpases to have a diversity of surfaces and having a building that properly fits the intended use. While both prop. 3 and prop. 2 have access to a extended period of daylight hours they really only have daylight on one large surfaces whereas Prop. 1 has light access on multiple surfaces. I’m curious as to how building orientation will affect these results and could be a future test.

Building Shape

While the building shape of Prop. 2 is unique, keeping my initial planning in mind it would be difficult to create modular spaces on each level dividing intended spaces with that building spape. While Prop. 3 allows you to diversify the spaces as intended Prop. 1 appears to be the most suited for the intended use of the building. Another building shape I would like to try is a triangular shaped building similar to the H that was created in Prop. 1 but with 3 main areas to fully accommadate the building plans as intended.
