Module 8 - Structural Framing Systems
  1. Model Update

At the very beginning, several updates are made according to the check-in feedback as well as self-reflection. During the room design check-in session, the section leader mentioned that the mechanical room should be included for our HVAC design later, so I include a mechanical room on each floor in the location shown below.

In addition, I forgot to dig a hole in the floor for the stairways in the previous submission, so I correct them this time.

  1. Linking Two Models

First of all, I construct the grid system in my structural model to confirm the approximate location for my columns and beams. The grid system is shown as below:

Then I create an entire new model as my structural model, and link my architectural model with it.

  1. Structural Columns System

At the preliminary design stage, I hope to come up with a mass timber structure. It is not only qualified to provide enough strength and support, but also sustainable and aesthetic for our center. Thus for the structural columns system here and the structural beams system below, I choose timber columns and timber beams to meet the design.

I choose 24×24 timber column here, since it is strong enough to support the large span, and does not affect the appearance as well. The arrangement of the columns on 1st floor is shown as below:

The column arrangement on 3rd floor:

  1. Structural Floor System

I copy the architectural floor from my previous model, but several changes are made:

4.1 Base Floor

The base floor is similar to the original one but the marble is removed:

4.2 2nd & 3rd floor

For the 2nd and 3rd floor, the marble layer is also canceled:

  1. Structural Beams System

Timber beams and girders are adopted for my structural beam system. I choose 24×24 wood beam, which has enough width and depth to provide satisfied strength. The beams have a -1’ excursion to be adjacent to the floor and support it.

The following figure shows the beam alignment with the floor:

I also put timber beam system in my design, which consist of 24×24 timber with 7’ 4” span in the two sides and 5’ in the middle.

  1. Structural Walls

I Copy my shear wall from the architectural model and turn it as my structural wall.

  1. Foundations

In order to decrease the high stress on the field, I use 96”×72”×18” shallow foundation in my building. The properties and the distribution is shown as below:

  1. Model Coordination

In the end, I upload the structural model and architectural model to the ACC, and do the model coordination. The combined model is shown as below:

To check if the two systems are perfectly aligned, let’s dive into some interior views:
