Post-survey reflections:

I realised that most of the responses I got from my survey weren’t people with crazy needs like Nicole (which was a crazy bit of my imagination anyways). I also look at the responses and think that the “empathy” aspect of the design thinking process really holds value to people. I think the most valid CCPs that align with the survey results were the “practical” and “minimalist” traits from eco-friendly Emma. I think I’ll modify Emma’s CCP to make it best fit with the survey results.

Key characteristics of the survey responses:

  1. Most of the people who actually cared about bicycle helmets were students and under the age of 20. There were a few exceptions, too, in terms of age and profession.
  2. More than half of the people said that safety is crucial while riding a bicycle, on a scale of 1 to 5, 5 meaning safety is crucial, 9/17 people opted for 5 while 16 people were in the range of 3-5.
  3. There was a surprisingly close competition between the reasons for people disliking wearing helmets. It was almost 1/3rd each to: a. bulky/bad material/ restrictive design, b. hassle to remove it every time you stop, and c. you always have to carry it in your hand or attach to bag which isn’t too stylish.
  4. Following the responses to the previous question, an almost 50-50 decision was made in terms of making the design of the helmet more breathable and the material more comfortable; and making carrying the helmet simpler when not in use.
  5. A resounding 70% of the people would leave their helmet attached to their bike when they’ve stopped somewhere in between their trip. This gives me more confidence in working through the prototype I’d initially thought of.
  6. Moreover, 88% of the people would buy a bicycle helmet that ensures the security of their bike when not in use (making the integrated lock aspect more desirable).
  7. Lastly, 70% of the people do feel that helmet manufacturers fail to bring home the message of safety due to poor design.
