1. Design of Building

image

The building consists of three floors. The first floor is the entrance, second and third floor are mainly for office use. On the roof of the building, it has a solar panel system installed.

  • the wall and roof surfaces
    • The exterior wall of the building is Basic Wall - Brick on CMU
      • property:

    • The floor material for the first floor and balcony is 3” LW Concrete on 2” Metal Deck
      • Property:

    • The floor material for the second floor is Wood Joist 10” - Wood Finish
      • Because the second floor is office, we use wood floor to provide high quality of thermal resistance

    • The floor material for the third floor is Wood Truss Joist 12” - Carpet Finish
      • because the third is designed for the manager's office. Therefore, I choose to use a carpet finish to reduce the acoustic problem and provide high-quality floor material

  • the openings/glazed surfaces
    • windows and/or curtain walls
      • the window is installed on each side of the building
      • In front of the building is the curtain wall system. It connects to the atrium of the building with a glass roof.
    • doors
      • the door is installed on each side of the building. In the front door, I also installed two rotation doors to avoid the leakage of the cooling air in the building.
      • On the East and West sides of the building, there are two doors connected to the balcony on the second floor.
    • skylights
      • skylight is highly optimized in the design. In the middle of the building, it has an atrium system to provide natural sky lighting to the building. On the side of the building, The balcony is also installed curtain wall with a vertical Mullion system to avoid exceeding the skylight.
  • any shading or sun control features
    • Mullion is installed on the front curtain wall to avoid too much direct sunlight.
    • On the side of the building, the balcony is installed with a shading system.
    • In reality, I hope this mullion can rotate depending on the sun's angle to reduce exceeding sun lighting

2. Energy Model

Benchmark EUI of 34.4 without any change:

After modification, the EUI of the building becomes -1.41EUI.

image
  • Roof Construction: R60
  • Infiltration: 0.17ACH
  • operating Schedule: 12/5, this feature highly influences the performance of the building
  • PV is another major factor influencing the energy performance of the building
    • PV panel efficient: 20.4%
    • PV Payback Limit: 20-30Years
    • PV surface coverage: 90%

  • Option 2

I placed the camera in three different locations: first is at the hallway, second toward the front curtain wall, and third is the meeting under the atrium.
