What are the principal advantages of using a single building information model of the existing conditions as the foundation for modeling proposed additions or renovations?
- There are countless advantages of using a single building information model of the existing conditions as the foundation for modeling proposed additions. First of all, it gives the clients a very clear idea of how this new building will fit into what currently exists. It gives a clear idea of scale, how it will connect, a clear picture of design decisions, etc.
What sort of complexities are introduced when you construct a building complex in phases?
- When designing a building project in phases, many complexities arise along the way. One difficulty that I had was trying to connect my floors without overlapping them; I built a bridge to connect my buildings (arguably the easiest way to connect an old building to a proposed new model), and even then I still struggled with blending old with new. One thing that I found helpful was trying to use the same materials on each half of the project to ease the transition between the two.
