What types of building information are best portrayed in 3D views?

  • Which stakeholders require 2D views, and why?

Some of the types that are best portrayed in 3D views can include room layouts and building exteriors (capturing different facades at once). Additionally it is easier to portray the ‘feel’ of some spaces in 3D since it is more similar to being physically present in the building. However 2D can be just as necessary. Contractors need 2D views to measure out the specific dimension, visualize entire floors (or sections) in just one plan, and placing out room and window tags. Client will also definitely need a 2D view to visualize the floor space.

Give examples of how the building information for a specific location in the project needs to be filtered for different audiences and purposes?

Some stakeholders need to know only a specific amount of information while, at the same time, some information may not be as relevant to them and can be omitted. For instance, it is not needed for constructors to know an estimated position of furniture as their are focusing on the core elements of the construction. For clients, having elements like window tags may be unnecessary and even distracting. Even for stakeholders like those in charge for plumbing may deem furniture like sofas unnecessary, but things like casework and sinks will need to be kept.

How can schedule views be used to assist with procurement and model-based estimating?

Having all the square information in one sheet can help calculate costs easier. For schedules like a wall schedule, we can list the square footage of each wall, and by knowing the material, we can calculate the specific cost of each wall in a more effective way. Same can apply to elements like doors or windows. It can also help keep track of all documentation and elements needed for a project. Additionally, if there are any changed made to the project, the schedule views can help easily identify this.
