Module 3 - Project Goals Targets & Strategies
Designing a transit center in an urban megapolis. Maybe a future cal-train, MUNI, AC transit, BART, connection? (what salesforce could have been?)
Goal 1: Spatial Navigation
- Measure: Wayfinding
- Transit Orientated Design
- Targets:
- In a transit center people must be able to smoothly and efficiently find their destination (platform, exit, etcetera) however speed is not a priority in this project rather than accessibility and ease (this will allow folks that are able to speed through a space to do so).
- My project will incorporate the 5 principles of way finding: create an identity at a location, use landmarks to provide orientation cues, create well-structured paths, create regions of differing visual characteristics, dont give the user too many navigational choices.
- Ideally my project should have all 5 principals, I will minimally accept 3 out of 5.
- Demand Flexibility
- Strategies:
- A center room (think the main hall at Grand Central Station) that easily shows each platform. Perhaps colored by mode of transit or destination region? One floor.
- A donut room that has off branches for each mode of transit that lead into other rooms. Underground? Center is elevator to outside to exit.
Goal 2: Grid Resiliency and Electrification
- Measure: Demand Flexibility
- Targets:
- Electrification does hand in hand with building grid interactions. To be a pinnacle of sustainability the building must adapt and respond to demand response events.
- Building should lower electric load at-least 5% during DR event.
- Minimally accepted 2% load shed.
- Strategies:
- Office for facility manager to monitor grid conditions and lower electric load if needed.
- Need to determine how to allow this with electrification of systems and transit—> perhaps outside scope of project
- Ample daylighting and passive heating/cooling to minimize electric load to avoid excess load shed needs.
Goal 3: Decarbonization
- Measure: GHG emissions
- Targets:
- Exceed GHG building performance standard by 5 years
- in NYC buildings must perform at or under a certain amount of carbon emissions. My building should be at the 2030 performance standard by 2025.
- Minimally accepting surpassing 2025 if not at 2030
- Strategies:
- On-site renewables to minimize in-direct emissions
- Fully electrified to minimize direct emissions
