  1. The vascular system within the human body reminds me of hallways and corridors in buildings. In the body, veins circulate blood throughout the system to keep the body alive. They also pump blood in and out of the heart of the body. To me, hallways and corridors not only are vessels that serve as passageways to transport a building’s occupants, but also bring people together to a center (or heart). The heart of a building can have many different meanings, to some the heart might be a home, to others it might mean a central meeting place, but regardless hallways pump people in and out of the heart of a building as well as circulates them around the building system.

  1. The structural supports within a building act similarly to our bones within the human body. These supports are not seen, but without them the beautiful exterior of a building would not be possible. Structural systems that are built within a building not only provide the necessary support to initially hold up a building, as our bones do for our bodies, but protect a building through many possible elements and external forces.

  1. Architecture mimics systems within biological creatures. My favorite examples are the Calatrava Sundial Bridge and Quadracci Pavillion. Calatrava is known for implementing inspiration from living organisms into his designs and both of these structures take inspiration from birds. The Sundial Bridge is meant to mimic a birds singular wing and the Quadracci Pavillion looks like a bird in flight. Both structures are dynamic in nature, just like their inspiration is.
