What types of building information are best portrayed in 3D views?

  • Which stakeholders require 2D views, and why?

By using the 3D views of the building, the aesthetics of the exterior and interior, the ambient environment, and furniture arrangements could be shown to clients. People could have a more realistic feeling when viewing with 3D views.

For building walls, construction worker needs 2D views of the floor plans to understand the entire room arrangements. The annotated lengths of each wall, window, and door could give them a better understanding of how the room is designed.

Give examples of how the building information for a specific location in the project needs to be filtered for different audiences and purposes?

When doing basic construction, it is essential to filter only walls, doors, windows, etc. for workers because they only need to build the basic elements of the house. Showing other irrelevant components could affect their visualization of the house arrangement. However, for clients or interior designers, filter plumbing equipment, casework, and furniture will be more helpful for them to visualize the entire design from aesthetics aspect and efficiency of utilization of the rooms.

How can schedule views be used to assist with procurement and model-based estimating?

Schedule views could provide detailed information for clients to have a better understanding of the components of the building. For example, the materials and area listed for walls help estimate the total costs for exterior and interior walls and have an estimated amount of materials when purchasing construction materials. If the total price exceeds the budget, clients could consider choosing other materials to reduce costs. Furthermore, the room schedule view could also help customers get a better sense of the arrangement of rooms in the house; the window schedule view could allow clients to estimate the sunlight coverage in the place.
