What are the principal advantages of creating a conceptual design model using masses before diving into the detailed design and building element modeling?
It allows more flexible movement and alterations of forms, especially when working on large scales. It also automates some tasks like creating floors.
Should all buildings be modeled first using conceptual masses?
When is it needed/appropriate? And when not?
For example, should you create a conceptual mass model of a small house?
A conceptual mass could be useful for a small house if it would be easily modeled by mass shapes. However, it may be unnecessary and make it more difficult to model small details. However, conceptual masses may be needed to efficiently model tall or otherwise large buildings, since these usually have regular and repeating forms which can be effectively expressed by masses.
Can you think of any examples of a real building around the world that most likely was created by exploring the form using conceptual mass models?
