Journal Entry For
Module 7 - Building Envelope Systems

Overall, Mass timbers are used for reducing embodied carbons. Mass timber is a more sustainable building material compared to concrete and steel. Trees absorb a significant amount of carbon dioxide, and they will not emit them when they are used as building materials. Especially after the end of the building life cycle, mass timbers can be reused for the new building or infrastructure repair. I also want to plant the same amount of trees used for this building to maintain the carbon sequestration cycle.

There are many curtain walls to use natural light for the exhibition in the South façade. In the exhibition space, the conference host can use full sunlight with curtain walls as below. It is the best place to use sunlight and artificial light together to maximize the light and shadow effect on the exhibition. Some exhibitions require natural light, but there is a critical barrier: if it is rainy, it cannot hold it. This interior exhibition center with mass curtain walls will offset the fatal flaws of outdoor exhibitions.

On the green roof, people can take a rest. The left side of the roof is the place for visitors to play. Visitors can directly access the roof by using the elevator. Since there are several conference and meeting rooms on the second and third floors, the stair is also placed for walking access. During the break time, meeting or conference participants can take a break from the fresh air and the lawn. The green rooftop also contributes to energy savings through thermal mass and insulation.

On the 3rd-floor corridor, skylights are placed. Since many offices are placed on the third floor, most of the daily light energy consumption will come from the third floor. The light energy usage can be minimized by using wide curtain walls facing to the South and skylights. These windows will give employees and researchers, who spend most of their time in the building, a sense of openness, allowing them to blow away the stress of their work.

For the South façade, some floors are extended for shadowing. Extended floors help to avoid damage from the rain and reduce the temperature effect of the sunlight. Since the South facade is affected a lot by the sun, some amount of shading is required to use the interior space of the building comfortably. In real construction, the extended floor can be replaced by a sunshade, which can be installed on the floor.

Some extended transoms are installed for shadowing. Installing many curtain walls can have many advantages, such as giving openness to visitors, but it also has a critical disadvantage; too much sunlight penetrates deep into the building. Extended transoms will mitigate this problem. The automatically adjustable transoms will optimize the sunlight usage and energy consumption, as the length of transoms is changed based on the building energy usage.
