Why do different teams of designers and subcontractors link and share their models during the design process?

Linking models during the design process can help create a basis for creating the main design, and with all of the measurements and basic framing loaded in. Sharing their models helps keep any design changes and decisions consistent across the board. This may result in too many changes to the buildings by different groups, creating changes that are inconsistent with the desires of other groups.

How do you think design coordination was done before we started using digital models?

Design coordination was likely done by creating vague outlines of the building shapes within a certain location and ironing it down before creating any of the structural outlines.

At what point in the project development process should design coordination start?

Design coordination should start from the beginning of the project. If any aspect of the design is not appropriate or possible or ideal for the design, having it established in the initial stages could affect the stages later on.
