What are the principal advantages of creating a conceptual design model using masses before diving into the detailed design and building element modeling?

One of the main advantages is that you are able to test conceptual ideas and see them visually in Revit without taking the time of creating each wall and space one by one; this saves time and allows you to test ideas quickly.

Should all buildings be modeled first using conceptual masses?

Conceptual masses are not needed for small buildings, which do not require you to map hundreds of thousands of square feet which would be tedious for large buildings, hence the need for conceptual masses!
