Office Hours Mtg Notes
Thomas & Theo design brainstorm notes:
- circular structures broken into pieces inspired by hollowed out tree with fungus growing inside — the fungus hangs off the side like a nodule that could be a self contained classroom or flex space
- the core/interior of each main vertical structure could be shared amentities and access points for the nodules that span off of the vertical structure
- one possible concern is those afraid of heights might be hesitant to enter nodules
- work around this via landscaping (you see a bed or canopy of trees directly under you)
- using structural supports to make it feel like you’re not hanging off the side of a building
Sustainability Features:
- natural light in every room
- Every space has exterior windows that can be opened for fresh air and ventilation
- Views of nature from every point / space
- Inner atrium / communal space will be a tree filled forest-like space providing a natural canopy of shade and also contribute to the views of nature from inner-views of circular space
- Vertical gardens (plant walls) built into the structure both indoors and outdoors — bringing the outside-in.
- Solar panels used in all locations that cannot support glass in building
- Pixelated camouflage exterior design element will help structures blend into natural surroundings and be less disruptive to natural environment
- This will be a place so inviting that students and teachers won’t want to leave. They’ll be excited and inspired to be in the space everyday.
Additional programming ideas that make the community more sustainable:
- during summer months could we convert unused space on campus to artist studios or other flex space for other members of the local community e.g. artists that can’t afford a studio in Palo Alto could have a 8-10 week residency where they get 500-1000 sqft to create art and have access to Stanford resources
- Are there other local institutions and organizations we can partner with as an organization that would give back (or recycle) “human capital” resources as an additional sustainable feature?
