Module 7 - Points to Ponder

Which types of structural framing systems and materials are most commonly used in the US for residences? For office buildings?

What factors determine why these are the most used materials?

The materials that I see more common in the US for residences is wood framing. For buildings we see more of a steel structure. We see more steel material because buildings are subject to more load that steel can provide.

Why do different teams of designers and subcontractors link and share their models during the design process?

The advantage of linking models is that we see a more collaborative approach from the design and structure so they can improve designs or structural support. The problem may arise when both teams cannot agree and move forward from this collaborative tool.

How do you think design coordination was done before we started using digital models?

I think coordination was done by sharing physical blueprints and design options and a lot of in-person meetings.
