My design inspirations and big feature ideas include thinking about the environment in relation to the building I design. I hope to create a playful, fanciful design, as this class is a great opportunity to design freely, unconstrained by many of the challenges of designing for a real life client and construction. Big features include a focus on windows, to add opportunities for nice views and natural lighting, and playing with scale to create both moments of monumental drama and comfortable nooks for privacy. I would like to think about sustainability in terms of longevity, designing for use over time, with durable materials that are meant to sustain the wear of time and natural elements. I’ve selected some photos of staging views, portals of connection from the inside to the external landscape, natural lighting. I like the organic forms and opportunities for movement or cycles implied by the water features pictured in some of these images, thinking about the first exercise we did about how a building might mimic natural biological functions.

I have included a picture of Tatiana Bilbao’s Los Terrenos as I appreciate the way she cites inspiration from the flora and fauna of the site in Mexico upon which this structure is designed. Certain elements included within this design, like a semi-permeable wall which allows for ventilation and light filtration, embody to me an approach to sustainability that preserves aesthetic elegance.
