What are the principal advantages of using a single building information model of the existing conditions as the foundation for modeling proposed additions or renovations?

  • Why not create a separate model for the new proposed design?

Using a single building information model of the existing conditions as the foundation for modeling proposed additions or renovations allows us to build a more accurate extension that would suit the old building. A building needs to look cohesive and for the extension to happen with the old building, it would allow a theme to be formed. There can be better interaction between the two buildings.

In your project, which features of the proposed design did you choose to model as design alternatives?

  • Why did you choose these building features? And what were the biggest challenges in modeling them as the design alternatives?

I chose to design alternatives for several pieces of furniture in the socializing area and study area. I believe that those areas are where students would spend more of there time and to have different options would allow them to find one that makes them feel more comfortable.
