What are the primary goals of creating a building model? Who are the key stakeholders?

  • Stakeholders are the buyers and what they need is a product that they imagine in their head that with the use of building models, I can bring to life and work with.
  • Their highest priorities are getting the best quality of product given financial and time constraints

How much detail should you include about the composition (layers, materials, thicknesses) of your wall, floor, and roof assemblies at different stages of your design process?

  • Conceptual design
    • minimal, just to give an idea
  • Preliminary design
    • generally detailed
  • Design development
    • details (the more details here the less tweaks in the construction documentation
  • Construction documentation
    • MAXIMUM DETAIL

Many door and window manufacturers provide Revit families for doors and windows that you can specify for your building design.

  • What is the advantage to manufacturers for providing these families? (it's not free to create and provide them...)
    • It facilitates sales as the buyers can see the product in their building models, instead of imagining it and it can be part of the filtered search for their specific dimensional needs, hence it would be a 17% chance of purchase (for example) versus fractions of a percentage when the products is just out on the whole market
  • What is the benefit to you as the designer of using these manufacturer-provided families? Is there an advantage to using them versus the families provided in the Revit library?
    • They can be more accurate in terms of you buy them immediately from the provider and install them versus having to go find the door that matches at a retailer
