What are the principal advantages of using a single building information model of the existing conditions as the foundation for modeling proposed additions or renovations?

  • Why not create a separate model for the new proposed design?

It is better to create a single model as it is a more streamlined process, allowing the designer to best contextualize the project. Things like lighting, material preferences, and edits to an existing design are not lost as you make changes.

What sort of complexities are introduced when you construct a building complex in phases?

  • It was so nice to organize at the beginning and have a system. I felt myself going faster as the project went on, even though it took more time to set up. The complexities of building in phases are able to be tackled if your organization is in order.

In your project, which features of the proposed design did you choose to model as design alternatives?

  • I chose to change the layout of the cafe, the roof, and a glass wall.
  • These were all options that I was debating, and so I thought it would be a good idea to present both. They also all have a strong impact on the feel of the finished design.
