What are the primary goals of creating a building model? Who are the key stakeholders?

The primary goals of creating a building model are to model true building elements that interact smartly. With a a building model, stakeholders have a single source for all information that can use as reference for previous, present, or future projects. The key stakeholders would be the client, architect, and general contractor.

How much detail should you include in your building model? How do you decide?

  • As you develop your initial design?
  • As you continue to iterate and develop on your design?
  • What are the key stages?
  • And how much detail should you include at each stage?

Many door and window manufacturers provide Revit families for doors and windows that you can specify for your building design.

Advantages for manufacturers are ensuring that their clients get the product which they have listed and what was used in design. I believe that this helps everyone involved because the downsides of getting a product that does not align with the model can have significant impacts on the schedule on cost of the project.

The benefits to me as a designer are that I accurately model what will eventually be on site. This allows the client to test out different products and view them in the model before committing to buying them.

What are the advantages of getting the Revit component families (for furniture, equipment, and fittings) directly from the manufacturer versus from an online sharing website like RevitCity.com?

By getting Revit components directly from manufacturer websites you can rely on the component dimensions being accurate and true to the real thing. Whereas if you pull from an online sharing website like revitcity, the model may not a line with the product once it is on site.
