Your Design Journal entries for this module should highlight:
- the design alternatives that you modeled and tested
- the results of the analyses and how they influenced your thinking about how to move forward
Use text , images, web links, movies... Whatever media works best to express your ideas!
For 2 or 3 units
- Create and share a Psychometric chart for your project location.
- Test 2 different alternative conceptual building forms using:
- Insight analysis to predict the energy performance each of the forms
- Solar insolation analysis to predict the solar radiation on the surfaces of the forms
- Post images of the design alternatives that you modeled and the results of the analyses
- Explain your reasoning and the tradeoffs that influenced your decision about which design option to move forward with
My location will be somewhere within this red area next to the Tilikum Crossing over the Willamette river in downtown Portland, OR.
This Psychrometric chart shows that there is much more of a heating demand than a cooling demand.
This second Psychrometric chart shows that these two design strategies (high thermal mass night flushed and internal heat gains) drop the cooling demand to 0.1% and the heating demand to 54%
This image shows the solar energy for a base rectangular building shape with 3 floors totaling about 35,000 sf.
This image shows the solar energy of my more complicated building model where I want to make a path around the building to the roof which will be a park. It’s a little too big at the moment at 64,000 sf so I’ll need to scale it down a little (although some of the “floor space” won’t be usable with the current geometry. I also just set these slopes sort of at random, I’m not sure if there is some standard I should follow.
Here is the insight report.
