Right now, a lot of my design inspiration is coming from the Portland International Airport renovations currently taking place. I think the idea of a mass timber structure that also showcases how the timber was sourced would be a great idea for a sustainable design exhibition space. I also like the idea of the smooth contours and greenery within the space making the space feel more alive and organic. I also like the idea of turning some/all of the facades into greenspace (like below).
Some other inspiration comes from Y2E2 and how they showcase their energy use with a colored light.
Ideally, this space would:
- Be fully electric (and hopefully net zero energy)
- Use and showcase south facing windows and thermal masses as forms of natural heating
- Incorporate as much natural light as possible
- Use PV on the roof where possible but also potentially as south-facing window overhangs
- Maybe a “green roof” that would also serve as a miniature park space for people to walk around (there would obviously have to be some sort of safety precautions around the edges)
- Use recycled water whenever possible (including as irrigation for the green roof or green façade spaces)
- During the winter months and while solar is not producing enough energy to cover the building, I think an internal cogeneration display could also be cool to show how the excess heat from energy production can be used as heating/cooling for the building
