Key Findings from the Interview
- In what context does “Sustainability” have limitations in your personal life?
- There is no question that sustainability has its price. In the opinion of my interview partner, German politics should provide even more subsidies for private households to bridge restrictions in this area. In his house, for example, a new heating system had to be installed this year. Since the house was built in late 1990, heat pumps are not as efficient as in new buildings. So the most economical choice would have been a gas system. Although he ended up choosing the heat pump (because of the environment), he had to pay more for that choice, which sets the wrong incentives.
- What is your opinion concerning using rapid transit for travelling to work?
- My interview partner considers travelling with rapid transit as a good idea. Although he states, that the rapid transit station is quite a longer foot march away, such that it would take a way longer time to arrive at work. Hence, he suggests that infrastructure, in particular outside large cities, should be better! In this case, he would travel more often to work this way. On the other side, when giving the choice, sometimes the more comfortable option outweighs for him.
- My interview partner lives in North Rhine-Westphalia, where the waste rules are not as strict as for example in Bavaria. This makes life a bit harder, because he cannot split the waste as it should be, and even if he takes the extra-effort to do so, it doesn’t pay off in the end. At least, he really want to make sure that organic waste is splitted correctly, because it can be the case that otherwise methan will emerge from it. Therefore, he has built up an own compost heap to deal with it.
How important is waste management for you?
