Goal 1: Net Zero Energy Use

  • Measure: Total energy consumed compared to the total energy generated
  • Targets:
    • My minimally accepted value is that 80% of energy consumed is produced, with 20% sourced from off-site renewable energy
    • My desired / target value is a fully net zero product
  • Strategies:
    • Passive design: Reduce energy demand through a glass exterior to maximize natural light, while using dynamic glazing and shading devices to control temperature
    • Equip the roof of the building with many solar panels, providing energy to the building.
    • Include energy-efficient HVAC systems and appliances to reduce energy use
    • Include lighting sensors to limit the amount of light emitted when no one is present in the room.
      • Explore additional methods to monitor and optimize energy use (ex. smart thermostats)

Goal 2: Create A Pleasant Space

  • Measure: Living Building Challenge
  • Targets:
    • My minimally accepted value is 6/7 petals for the Living Building Challenge
      • Petals: Place, Water, Energy, Health + Happiness, Materials, Equity and Beauty
    • My desired / target value is Living Building Challenge certification (7/7 Petals)
  • Strategies:
    • Leverage natural light for a pleasant ambiance (Health + Happiness, Beauty)
    • Good thermal control and limit thermal gradients using dynamic glazing for cooler months and shading devices for warmer months (Energy, Health + Happiness)
    • Minimize stuffiness through open-concept design and ensure good indoor air quality through natural ventilation (Health + Happiness)
    • Achieve water and energy petals through design goals 1 and 3 (Water, Energy)
    • Incorporate biophilic elements- green roof, community garden exhibit and outside landscaping to enhance the visitor experience (Place, Beauty)
    • Accessible design for all users, including ADA compliance (Equity)
    • Prioritize locally sourced , red-list free, and responsibly harvested materials (Materials)

Goal 3: Reduce Water Use

  • Measure: Annual Water Consumption
  • Targets:
    • My minimally accepted value is 30% of water is reused
    • My desired / target value is 50% of water is reused
  • Strategies:
    • Green roof for rainwater collection
    • Greywater reuse for irrigation for landscaping and to nearby areas
    • Efficient fixtures with low flow to reduce water consumption
