Which types of structural framing systems and materials are most commonly used in the US for residences? For office buildings?

What factors determine why these are the most used materials?

  • For residence, in order to ensure the insulation performance, RC structure or wooden structure often used. On the contrary, for office buidling, it is common to use steel structure to have wider wall openings to have a comfortable work environment.

Why do different teams of designers and subcontractors link and share their models during the design process? 

What are the advantages of linking models?

Are there any disadvantages to linking models?

  • Not to have any discrepancy or crash between designer and subcontractor’s drawings.
  • The disadvantage is that we have to spend a hard time to deal with heavy data and revision control.

How do you think design coordination was done before we started using digital models? 

What advantages does doing this coordination digitally have over previous methods?

  • Easy to understand owner’s and designer’s objective or goal
  • Easy to cost estimation
  • Easy to complete the contract with subcontractors.
  • Easy to estimate project duration
