Module 3 - Project Goals Targets & Strategies
List your three or four guiding design goals using this format for each goal:
Goal 1: Create a carbon-friendly structure
- Measure: Utilize average carbon emissions for commercial buildings with similar square footage to regulate and limit the usage of materials that are not carbon-dioxide intensive in their production
- Targets:
- minimally acceptable value: 10-20% less than the average of a 30000 sq ft business facility - 482 tons of CO2 per year (According to the University of Berkeley’s carbon footprint estimate)
- desired / target value: 40-50% less than the average of a 30000 sq ft business facility
- Strategies:
- one design strategy that I’d like to explore in my design to achieve this goal
- Utilizing wood as a primary source of construction
- a second design strategy for achieving this goal
- Buy from locally sourced, responsible providers.
- Measure: Create an interconnecting central courtyard surrounded by appealing facades
- Targets:
- minimally acceptable value: Internal courtyard takes up 20% of total square footage (Interior + Exterior)
- desired / target value: Internal courtyard takes up 30% of total square footage (Interior + Exterior), interactive outdoor areas by exterior facades, and outdoor seating for venues and possible concerts.
- Strategies:
- one design strategy that I’d like to explore in my design to achieve this goal
- Creating outdoor ideas that unite the interior with exterior areas (for instance- an outdoor seating for a cafe, an exhibition that starts indoors but flows into the outdoors)
- a second design strategy for achieving this goal
- Creating glass-predominant, interior-facing facades and placing the structural elements within the center of the building
- Measure: Utilize the Architecture 2030 standards for electricity consumption (in kWhr/m2/year)
- Targets:
- minimally acceptable value: Building meets ASHRAE standards and falss within 10-20% of meeting Architecture 2030 goals
- desired / target value: Building meets Architecture 2030 goals
- Strategies:
- one design strategy that I’d like to explore in my design to achieve this goal
- Maximizing the efficiency of the HVAC systems (by using demand-controlled ventilation, making use of solar panels, for instance)
- a second design strategy for achieving this goal
- Utilize energy efficient lighting and make use of natural lighting
