Key Findings from the Interview

  • How do they define the term "sustainability"?
  • My friend defines the term sustainability as a kind of lifestyle or way of doing things that do not use excessive resources and is often reusable.

  • What aspect do they care most about sustainability?
  • She cares most about how accessible being sustainable is in one's daily life. She thinks that it's important for people to be sustainable, but the most important aspect of that is to make it accessible and easy for people to utilize sustainable resources.

  • What actions are they taking towards living a sustainable life?
  • Her family composts and tries not to use plastic utensils. My friend does not shop at fast-fashion clothing chains. Her family enjoys going to the farmer's markets so they can purchase items from locals instead of big retail stores. Her house uses solar panels and they use this form of renewable energy for their daily activities.

  • How would they like to foster a more sustainable lifestyle in the future?
  • She wishes to persuade her father to be more environmentally conscious so that the family as a whole can be more sustainable. She wants to alleviate her father's spending habits and ensure that the family's money goes towards sustainable items instead. She also wants to follow in her sister's footsteps and become a bigger sustainability advocate.

  • What are their reservations or concerns about sustainability in today's society?
  • She thinks that it's really easy for people to talk about being sustainable, but it's hard for them to actually take the steps to do it. Also, people should realize what a privilege it is to be sustainable because cheaper options are often not sustainable. For example, using plastic and purchasing junk food are cheaper alternatives to using reusable utensils and eating greens.
