Design Journal Entry - Module 1

Journal Entry For
Module 1 - Design Inspirations & Big Feature Ideas

I am drawn to the concept of incorporating nature, local materials and cultures into whatever design I come up with. This goes hand in hand with my sustainability goals of making sure that my design/ structure does not interfere with existing natural landscapes, but instead working around it or finding creative ways of intergrating them into my design.

I also want to play around with the concept of passive design which will involve thinking about massing and orientation of my building on the site that I choose to maximize the natural energy from the sun that can be used for heating, cooling and natural lighting for the exhibition space. This also brings up the idea of occupant comfort.

Solar panels, green architecture etc

Indoor water reuse

I haven’t thought about location of my site quite yet, but it will be either the ones suggested by the teaching team as it entails uneven landscape (which will be interesting to think about when trying to incorporate it into my design) or somewhere tropical and in Africa because I would like to play around with the idea of traditional African architecture, locally available construction materials in the region that I chose and the local culture. I really want to push and challenge myself with this project and to think of designing for the environment as well as the people.

I am mostly inspired by the work of Francis Kere (He is my idol and I want to meet him, so if anyone has connects please dm me lol) and the intricate geometry of Frank Lloyd Wright’s work. So a design that draws inspiration from both of these amazing architects would be very cool. Below are some of their work that might inspire this project

National park of Mali, Francis Kere: Incorporating local landscape.

Burkina Faso National Assembly, Francis Kere: Incorporating greenery and conforming to the aesthetics of surrounding structures. Maximizing green space as much as I can

Gando library, Francis Kere : Use of earthly based materials - compressed earth blocks, clay bricks

Start up Lyon Campus in Kenya by Kere: Love love the Earthly aesthetics. Using local materials, maximizing natural ventilation. The campus’ volumes are made of locally sourced quarried stone, with an all-encompassing plaster finish, also extending to non-accessible roofs, of a warm and earthy nuance.
