What are the primary goals of creating a building model? Who are the key stakeholders?

  • What do they need?
  • What do they care about most?

It is used to communicate design ideas in a more programmatic way.

It helps to see the relationship between the design and the environment.

It helps the project to be  completed smoothly from cradle to the grave.

Enhances collaboration and coordination on the project

Reduce error and mitigate risk

Stakeholders

Could vary slightly from project to project the main ones are:

Client: Land acquisition, funding the project…

Designer(Architect, Engineers…):Brings the client ideas or desire to life through design

Builders(contractor, subcontractor..):Building the structure from the design

Government Authorities: regulate the structure is in compliance with the regulation

What they care about most:

Client : To get the building they desire with in reasonable time and budget

Designer: Design a structure that is safe, economical, serviceable and durable

Creating a feasible design according to the clients requirements and desire

a  design that meet regulations and standards

make sure that the building serves its desired purpose

The building team: Converting the design to actual real world structure within the desired duration and budget of the building.

They want to build a structure that is according to the client desire which is also compliant to the building code and that will be successfully implemented with in the time frame and budget estimated.

How much detail should you include in your building model? How do you decide?

  • As you develop your initial design?
  • As you continue to iterate and develop on your design?
  • What are the key stages?
  • And how much detail should you include at each stage?

How much detail should you include about the composition (layers, materials, thicknesses) of your wall, floor, and roof assemblies at different stages of your design process?

  • Conceptual design

It is a creative process and early stage of a design Initial ideas will be established to show more or less how the building will look

It is a phase of design for discussing options, opportunities and  constraints

Basically helps to change the clients idea in to initial drawing and create a design that reflects the owner’s desire

  • Preliminary design

Shape ,size, location, and relationships between spaces will be established

Components need to be included in the building will be determined

The conceptual design will be modified.

  • Design development

Provide detail information for interior and exterior design of the building

Material selection including interior finishes and components like windows, doors, fixtures, appliances, and materials. Preliminary engineering on the structure as well as plumbing, electrical, heating/ventilation systems, energy analysis and any other project specific systems.

  • Construction documentation

All products and materials are will be selected and specified in great detail according to the final selected design.

Documentation that will guide to move forward with the project will be prepared.

Technical specification and drawing will be prepared that will be used in bidding construction and permit application. Multiple drawing sets will be produced according to the purpose of the drawing.

Contractors will use these detailed drawings and specifications to prepare for the next phase in the architectural design process.

Many door and window manufacturers provide Revit families for doors and windows that you can specify for your building design.

  • What is the advantage to manufacturers for providing these families? (it's not free to create and provide them...)
  • What is the benefit to you as the designer of using these manufacturer-provided families? Is there an advantage to using them versus the families provided in the Revit library?

What are the advantages of getting the Revit component families (for furniture, equipment, and fittings) directly from the manufacturer versus from an online sharing website like RevitCity.com?

Manufacturer websites contains components that exit in the real-world. Hence it represents what is actually available in the market. It gives realistic information for the client, designer and the contractor. Since the component exist in the real-world, the client might have seen this item somewhere or could go to manufacturer place and see what it looks like to get better insight so the client could easily associate with this components and decide if they want this in their building. The contractor could easily find this component with the described property during construction and also knows where to find this item. It also provides better estimation for the cost. Since the cost could be obtained from the manufacturer website.
