Aquaponics uses aquaculutre and hydroponics

Aquaculutre is fish farming in tanks

Hydroponics is growing plants in water instead of soil

Fish poop provides nutrients for the plants

Benefits

90-99% less water usage than agriculture

Much more space efficient

because of the closed loop system, much fewer inputs needed and and fewer harmful emissions

Necessary Components

Tank for fish

Grow bed for plants

pump cycles water from tank to plants

siphon cycles water from plants to fish tank

this system produces fish and produce

byproducts include fish poop and dead plant matter (leaves, etc)

these byproducts can be combined with composts from the eaten fish and produce to create both fertilizers and fish feed

Components to be incorporated into our idea

Tank for fish

Grow bed for plants

Filter & pump to bring water from tank to plants

gravity based siphon to bring water from plants to tank

composter that creates fish feed from dead plants and food compost

composter that creates fertilizer from dead fish and food compost

collection system in tank that collects fish excrement automatically

Algae based biofuel

Algae are 60 times more efficient at producing biofuels than land based plants

biomass from algae can be used as feedstock in a self sustaining system
