Which types of structural framing systems and materials are most commonly used in the US for residences? For office buildings?

What factors determine why these are the most used materials?

US residences mainly use wood structural framing systems since they do not have to hold as much weight as larger commercial buildings. In addition, wood framing is cheaper and easier to construct with, which is beneficial for small-scale projects. Office buildings, on the contrary, are at a much larger scale, thus steel or concrete structural framing systems are needed since they are higher in strength and are more durable than wood.

Why do different teams of designers and subcontractors link and share their models during the design process?

What are the advantages of linking models?

Are there any disadvantages to linking models?

How do you think design coordination was done before we started using digital models?

What advantages does doing this coordination digitally have over previous methods?

What strategies can design teams use to find and avoid clashes prior to the start of construction?

What can be done besides sharing the models digitally?

In addition to sharing the models digitally, there should be frequent meetings between design teams to coordinate developments on each side and to remove as many clashes during the pre-construction phase as possible. In addition, the creation of 3D models can serve as a visualization of the project’s vision as well as a rough draft for each design team and can clarify any last-minute clashes before the start of construction.

At what point in the project development process should design coordination start?

Is it ever too early?

Design Coordination should start in the initial pre-design process to align the goals of all the project’s stakeholders, such as the architects and structural engineers. Starting early on allows for all engaged parties to have a common understanding of the goal and removes any differences and clashes later on in the design process.
