Which types of structural framing systems and materials are most commonly used in the US for residences? For office buildings?

What factors determine why these are the most used materials?

Why do different teams of designers and subcontractors link and share their models during the design process?

What are the advantages of linking models?

Are there any disadvantages to linking models?

They link the buildings so that design can happen in real time. They also give the engineers and architects an idea about how they are tackling a model. Disadvantages of the linking the model is if the teams are not communicating. The model can get messy very quick.

How do you think design coordination was done before we started using digital models?

What advantages does doing this coordination digitally have over previous methods?

The architects would draw up plans and then they would go to the engineers who would then design the structural system. Or tell the architects it wasn’t possible haha. It would have probably also included having an in house structural engineer at the architecture firm.

What strategies can design teams use to find and avoid clashes prior to the start of construction?

What can be done besides sharing the models digitally?

At what point in the project development process should design coordination start?

Is it ever too early?

I think it can be too early simply because engineers and architects classically(as a general rule) see things differently. Starting coordination too early may hinder a projects development and turn it into a cookie-cutter mass. It may not be able to realize the true potential it could.
