Description
For this project, I was inspired by the layout of the engineering buildings on campus, hence the U-shape. I wanted to make the new design look the same as the old design for a more cohesive feel, so the materials for the interior and exterior elements are all the same. The total area of the proposed design is 13,445 square feet, which meets the standard outlined in the design brief.
One of my main goals for this project was to demolish as little of the existing building as possible. This saves both time and money and also decreases the physical and mental burden construction causes on the community. The first story is an open-concept plan and features a cafe, dining area, and lounge. The open-concept plan allows for many different furniture layout configurations so occupants can adjust the space to best suit their needs. The second story hosts a number of rooms that can be used for quiet study or meetings, as well as an open workspace. The open floor plan on this floor also allows for different furniture configurations. The second floor also has a balcony with seating that can be used for study or dining. The third floor hosts a maker space with printers, computers, and other technology. The majority of the third floor is intended to be used as a gallery space for student projects and works, so it has been left open with minimal walls to ensure that there is sufficient space for people to comfortably view what is on display. When this space is not in use, it can be converted to a second collaborative workspace or an open area to host social gatherings.
