What are the principal advantages of using a single building information model of the existing conditions as the foundation for modeling proposed additions or renovations?

  • Why not create a separate model for the new proposed design?
  • You want to have a single building information model for a couple of reasons. One for accuracy: you want to know exactly where the original/ old model is placed in respect to your extension. This will help a lot with logistics and save time for you in the future. Another reason is it helps you keep track of demolitions more accurately and allows you to show them highlighted within the model. Another one is just ease of access and simplicity; it is much easier to keep track of things if everything is in one model.

What sort of complexities are introduced when you construct a building complex in phases?

  • What happens at the interfaces between the buildings as the phases advance?
  • How can you plan and prepare for these complexities as your create your initial building model?

What are the principal advantages of using a single building information model of the existing conditions as the foundation for modeling several proposed design alternatives for a portion of the building?

  • Why not create a separate model for each of the design alternatives?

In your project, which features of the proposed design did you choose to model as design alternatives?

  • Why did you choose these building features? And what were the biggest challenges in modeling them as the design alternatives?
  • I choose to model interior walls, exterior wall facades, and walkway exterior facades as design alternatives. For the interior walls, I personally wanted to have collaborative workspaces which are more innovative and mental health focused but I knew the traditional option of individual workspaces might be wanted so I included them as well. For the exterior walls, I choose to give 3 options: curtain walls, closed walls, or mixture. This was because the original building had closed exterior walls but I wanted to give more modern options as well. I thought to have one with a full curtain and one with half would give an ample amount of choices. As for the walkway I gave the option of having an enclosed curtain wall or a walkway with arch openings. Again, this was just to provide a modern vs. older look and some variability. The biggest challenge is having to switch back and forth between each alternative view so that you can edit but it wasn’t to difficult
