We've all been to exhibition spaces -- some extraordinary and magical -- and some not so good. Thinking back on your experiences, what makes an exhibition space "great"?
Name a few (two or three) exhibition spaces or museums that you've really enjoyed...
- What are some the key features/aspects that you feel makes them so good?
- Why puts them at the top of the list?
- The Palace Museum — Beijing
One of the very basic principle of museum is space. I personally prefer the museum with large space and numerous collections. The Palace Museum has about 720,000 square metres (180 acres) of spaces, consists of 980 buildings and over 1.8 million pieces of art. More importantly, museum itself is also the historical art pieces. When people are viewing collections inside the museum, they are also standing inside a huge art masterpiece.
- The Museum of Contemporary Art & Planning Exhibition — Shenzhen
This modern museum is located at my hometown city Shenzhen. The most amazing part of this museum is combining the steel structure and glass structure. By fully utilizing the natural light through large area of glass facade, the metal inner part of museum always has a special metallic texture. Everything inside this museum has a pure smooth surface for light reflection. Multiple metal pieces in the lobby of museum expresses the metallic texture of the building. The marble floor and metal surface can maximumly reflect natural lighting to create a “light” space.
- Sea World Culture and Arts Center — Shenzhen
It is is a waterfront situated multi-use culture and arts center also located in Shenzhen. I enjoyed how the museum building blend into the nature surrounding it. Since it locates at seacoast, it not only provides space for art piece inside the museum, it also creates a place for audience to fully enjoy and appreciate the fantastic sea view. It is the perfect platform that allow human art collides with art of nature.
