The domain that I’d like to focus on is….
I would like to focus on the agriculture and organic waste domain since I believe it is an area that has a lot of potential for improvement. The agriculture field is well known for its huge use of fresh water, fertilizers, and other harsh chemical compounds that are needed for plant growth. On the other hand, there is an excess amount of organic waste that we humans tend to dump out each day.
I believe that these two issues can be combined to form one large-scale solution that starts at the individual level of each person's own house. A product, such as a compact composting system that sits under your sink, can be used to help turn organic waste into nutrient-rich compost that one could use in their own backyard. This would eliminate the need to use harsh fertilizers that may cause more damage to the surrounding area.
This area is important/interesting to me because….
This topic interests me as I took a water pollution humanities course during my undergrad years and I learned how scarce fresh water is and how harsh chemicals, such as fertilizers, can leech into the ground, spread, and ultimately reach and contaminate water reserves. The takeaway from that course was that it is necessary to create forms of sustainable and long-lasting synergies to avoid water pollution and create a better ecosystem around us.
For these reasons, I like the topic on agriculture and organic waste as it is something that (in theory) could be quickly solved but needs a commercial product, such as a compact composting system, for it to work.
