Step 1 - Generative Design Framework

A very brief description of the design decisions from Step 1 following the Generative Design Framework.

  • Monthly Property Cost vs Volume
    • Design Variables
      • Floor Area (Width x Length)
      • Volume
    • Evaluators
      • Cost
    • Most Important Tradeoffs to Consider
      • You want to minimize the monthly leasing cost while maximizing the volume of the building. The property value is based on the floor area of the building.
  • Construction Cost vs. Volume
    • Design Variables
      • Total Floor Area (Number of Floors x Floor Area)
      • Volume
    • Evaluators
    • Most Important Tradeoffs to Consider
      • The cost of constructing the commercial building should be minimized while the volume of the building should be maximized. The taller or bigger the building is the bigger the volume but it also increases the construction cost.
  • Lighting Energy Consumption vs. Volume
    • Design Variables
      • Total Floor Area
      • Volume
    • Evaluators
      • Energy Consumption (Total Floor Area x kWh per SF)
    • Most Important Tradeoffs to Consider
      • The energy consumption should be low to reduce the utility bill but this is contingent on the number of floors in building but you want to maximize the volume of the building to have as much production.

Step 2 - Generative Design Study

  • First, I had the building dimensions be the inputs for the study. The geometry of the building was created to calculate the volume of the building. Next, I calculated the Total Floor Area of the building by taking multiplying the width, length and number of floors. The numbers of floors are dependent on the height and each floor height. The total floor area is then multiplied with numbers that correspond to the analysis type (e.g. rent per month, kwh/sf, and $/sf). Lastly, these values are outputted to be used in the study.

Step 3 - Generative Design Study Results

  • The graph shows that as the volume increases, all the cost increase with it. However, it does not increase linearly, there are outliers where the cost the volume of one building could be bigger but have a lower lighting consumption because the height. This graph could be used to decision making in building design. It could help clients make decisions on what is an important factor in their design. If they wanted a building the consumes less energy but have the volume maximized then the construction cost will increase.
