  • A brief paragraph describing your structural system strategy

My strategy is to create a stable structural system. The spans of the beams are not too long or too short. I tried not to block any curtain walls or rooms, but the spans would be too long. I chose steel structural beams because they could have longer spans compared to wood beams. The bottom line is not to block any stairs or atrium openings on the first floor.

  1. Model a recommended framing system design for this building in a linked Revit model. Your design should include:
  2. Grids
  3. Structural Columns (W10x49)
  4. Beams and Beam Systems (Be sure to accommodate the stairs and atrium openings in your layout.)

  1. Choose structural systems for my proposed design:
  2. Steel-frame System

    1. Beam Maximum Span < 50’
    2. Beam Size: W12x26

  1. Feel free to simplify the proposed design for this very quick model. For example, you can simplify the design in the area highlighted in yellow by placing beams along the red line (ignoring the light scoops in the exterior wall).
  2. Merge the provided architectural model and your proposed structural model in the BIM 360 Model Coordination tool.
    1. Upload both models to BIM 360 Documents.
    2. Copy both models into your Coordination Space folder.
    3. Open the Model Coordination tool.
    4. Create a new Coordination view that merges the architectural and structural models.
    5. Capture a screenshot of an interior view showing the merged model similar to the image below.

  1. Review the merged model in BIM 360 Model Coordination:
  • Did you accidentally cover any floor openings (elevator, stairs, atrium)?
  • Are any columns placed in the middle of the hallways or rooms?
  • Did you meet the designer’s design intent?

I accidentally blocked the skylight, but not the stairs. There are columns in the middle of the open spaces. Otherwise, the spans of the beams would be too long. I met most of the designer’s design intent, but I blocked some windows for safety reasons.
