Space Design Guidelines

While the aesthetics are totally different than what I’m going for, I’m inspired by the exhibitionary nature of SpaceX’s headquarters in Hawthorne, CA. Its first level features large, open workspaces that are cordoned off with glass walls. The design allows for relative acoustic isolation from the outside, so guests and other workers can walk by and gawk without causing much disturbance to the employees.

I want my building to be a demonstration of a next-generation, biomimetic high-rise, so I think it should incorporate a lot of actual office space to be used by the company operating it. Many spaces, like galleries, a theater, and gift shop are exclusively meant for guests, but the office spaces should be relatively open to public viewing so they can see what the office space of the future looks like.

I am also inspired by the excellent layout of the Monterey Bay Aquarium, which fits lots of gallery spaces together in a highly efficient, comfortable layout. I also like their use of light to emphasize the exhibits above the mundane sight of other guests.

While it would be fun for my pseudo-office building to also be an aquarium, I think having a water feature with koi built into the floor of a large, central hallway is a nice compromise. There would be room on either side for plenty of ambulation, and occasional catwalks over the shallow water will allow for crossings.
