Design Journal Entry - Module 11

Power System Elements

For this module, I chose to power and light the fourth floor of my building, as it had about the right square footage and had the mechanical room. For the power system, I had a few main concerns regarding placement. First, in the exhibition space, I wanted a lot of plugs around the perimeter for possible exhibition needs, but due to the windows on the sun facing sides, I had to place them on the floor, which ultimately ended up being completely fine and worked great. I also had some floor plugs in the corridor, especially around the atrium, as there is not a wall to mount anything there, just a railing. In the office, I added a lot of plugs around the perimeter, and did the same for the mechanical room, as both will most likely need the most power. The final plugs were around the edges near the restrooms on both sides.

I divvied up the plugs into six circuits: (1) mechanical room, (2) office, (3) west corridor, (4) east corridor, (5) west exhibition, (6) east exhibition.

Lighting System Elements

For the lighting system, I also organized the lighting elements into the same six circuits based on placement, but each with specific lighting elements to achieve the correct average estimate illumination for each space.

Individual Spaces

Mechanical Room - min unlisted fc

Though there was no minimum illumination for this room, I decided to make it about as luminous as the office because there needs to be good lighting when mechanics have to come in and fix potential breaks or fine tune the HVAC, power, and lighting systems, so I added four overhead 2 x 4 troffer panels, which ended up with a 41 fc mechanical room.

Office - min 40 fc

The office was a bit different, as it has some natural light from the east windows, so I added some hanging LED lights to also meet the 40 fc requirements for offices and some recessed can downlights around the perimeter for some softer light.

Open/Exhibition - min 30 fc

For the four other circuits, I grouped them into the same space that I titled open/exhibition, as they all connected to each other. In the corridor, I used the hanging LED lights that I had used from the office, at 96” rather than the office 48,” and also added some recessed can downlights for more focused lighting in smaller areas with more daylight like the east corner.

For the exhibition part, I had some of the same recessed can downlights along the left walls of the west and east sides, as they are opposite to the nearly full window sides facing the sun, and then added overhead troffer lights until I met the 30 fc requirement.

Lighting Schedule

Here we have the three spaces that I explained above, with their total average estimated illumination.
