Great exhibition spaces are also part of the exhibition. When I was in New York City, I traveled upstate and visited the Dia exhibition in Beacon, NY. The space was an abandoned factory that found a new life as an art gallery. The art felt more important because the space itself was special. Exhibition spaces should also be open. They are showrooms for the future. People want to move freely about the area to find something. If you let your inhabitants feel that they’ve discovered something, they will leave feeling elevated. The Human experience is all about discovery. When we are young, we try new things and make errors and everywhere we turn we find something new. Exhibition spaces should treat adults in the same way, discovery should be at the center.
