What are the principal advantages of creating a conceptual design model using masses before diving into the detailed design and building element modeling?

The masses are much easier to use, and they allow you to be more creative. It allows you to play around with shapes more than trying to construct something with walls. You can get a much better idea of what the overall shape can look like using masses.

Can you think of any examples of a real building around the world that most likely was created by exploring the form using conceptual mass models?

I can see how this one would start with masses and then using tools like sweeps, lofts, and 3D cutting/pulling tools to get the final shape.
