What are the principal advantages of creating a conceptual design model using masses before diving into the detailed design and building element modeling?

It speeds up the initial design process and allows for preliminary design shapes to be decided on by a client and designer. By using masses the general shape can be obtained to express what is wanted to be expressed. It also allows for unique shapes to be made that may not have ordinary geometry.

Should all buildings be modeled first using conceptual masses?
