What are the primary goals of creating a building model? Who are the key stakeholders?

  • What do they need?
  • What do they care about most?

How much detail should you include in your building model? How do you decide?

  • As you develop your initial design?
    • low levels of detail
    • include walls, rooms, windows, doors
    • consider the shape of the building, its placement on the site, and general flow
  • As you continue to iterate and develop on your design?
    • think about the roof design to optimize airflow and light
    • think about furniture layout, bathrooms etc
  • What are the key stages?
    • concept
    • context (site and light)
    • flow (walls and doors and windows)
    • details (furniture)
  • And how much detail should you include at each stage?
    • I think the detail increases at every subsequent level
    • it is probably best to include as much detail as possible regardless of the level though

What are the advantages of getting the Revit component families (for furniture, equipment, and fittings) directly from the manufacturer versus from an online sharing website like RevitCity.com?

The advantages of getting components directly from the manufacturer is that we can ensure the parts will be optimized for our building project and will have dimensions that are true to life. In this way, we can ensure precision in all levels of our design, avoiding approximation. This makes the floor plan more accurate and could save building costs later as it avoids errors.
